Q. What do I need to start class?
A. To begin, the only equipment you need is loose fitting clothing but you should get a protective cup (men) or protective padding (women) as soon as possible.

Q. What about the uniform?
A. You will need a uniform before you can test for your first belt. Students will also need to get sparring gear when they achieve Yellow belt.

top

Q. What color of uniform do I have to get?
A. You can have any color that you would like but we suggest that you get black.

Q. I see that your students wear shoes. I thought martial arts students went barefoot?
A. There are two reasons our students wear shoes. The first of which is that if you were ever forced to defend yourself, you will likely be wearing shoes and so you might as well learn how to fight while wearing them. The second is that we had several students break their little toe when kicking. We haven’t had any broken toes since we started wearing shoes.

Q. Can I start at anytime or only on certain registration days?
A. You can start at anytime. The white belt lessons cycle so that anything you have missed will come back around again. Other students will usually take time to help with any information that has been missed.

Q. What if I miss a class? Is there a make up class? Do I get a refund of some sort?
A. If you miss a class, you should try to get with another student to see what was covered. I will also do quick catch-ups during classes at times to try and keep everyone together. There is no refund because the fee covers the instructor's time to be there. There will be awards given to the students for perfect attendance, month by month.

Q. Do you give private lessons?
A. I don’t give private lessons but if there is enough interest, I will begin the Fast Track to Black class where students will have another night per week of lessons. There would be an additional fee but it is much less than the cost of private lessons.

Q. What are the fees for the tests?
A. The test fee varies between the two schools. Ask the instructor for more details.

top

Q. How long until I test for my first belt?
A. If you practice, you should be ready to test in about 3 months. Younger students may take a little longer. The Tiger Stripe program was created to help keep them interested while they work toward their belts.

top

Q. What are the belt colors?
A. White, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Blue, Green, Brown, and Black.

top

Q. Is there anything else I should know about tests?
A. You should plan on spending three hours in class on test day (more for the higher belt levels). Family and friends are welcome to attend as long as they will be able to spend three hours without disrupting the testing process. Cameras and camcorders are allowed but photographers must stay off the testing floor during the test. I try to arrange seats for visitors to give them a good view of the students that are testing. Students should stay in their uniform with their new belt for a few minutes after the test to pose for photos.

top

Q. Is there sparring in your class?
A. We schedule one sparring class per month for Yellow belts and higher.

top

Q. Is it mandatory?
A. Yes, sparring is mandatory.

top

Q. What are the odds that I’m going to be injured in class?
A. It is a contact sport and we do quite a bit of physical activity as well so you are very likely to have some sore muscles and some bruises from time to time.

top

Q. What style do you teach?
A. Blue Tiger Tactical Defense is based heavily in American Kenpo but also incorporates other styles and might best be called a Mixed Martial Art.

top

Q. Does it work?
A. I have taught numerous police officers and corrections officers who have been forced to use their skills in real world situations. It has proven to be effective for them.

top

Q. How much should I practice on my own?
A. I only ask students to practice for 15 minutes per day. As test days get closer, students will naturally practice more to prepare for the test but that is left up to them. Students should also do at least one circuit per day of the exercises after they know them.
